Balance...I'm working on it...
I'm often confronted by the question "What do you do for a living?" "What is your occupation?" It is in those moments when I am filling out forms in the doctor's surgery, bank documents, or even signing up for a sporting event that force me to make a decision on this in only 1 or 2 words.
How can I? Who am I? What am I?
Amongst other things I am a Mother, Wife, Runner, Teacher, Doula, Personal Trainer, Yogi, Company Director...
I could go on...
Before I had children I was a high school teacher. If someone asked me what 'I was' my response was simple; a teacher. After getting married, having 3 children and starting 2 or 3 businesses I find myself in this place where I feel, at times, unable to define myself. This troubled me for some time and I started to talk to other women about it...It seems I'm not alone!
Then came the epiphany. It matters not what I put on that form. None of us are one thing, we all just choose what we feel is the dominant thing in our life when placed in a situation where we have to label ourselves. Or perhaps, we choose the thing that we would most like to be known for, or defined by.
For me my passion is balancing all these things...and like any craft, it is by no means perfected! But from now on when I am asked "What do you do?" my response will be simple... I Balance!
It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters in the end.
